Larner Associate Professor and Chair of Emergency Medicine Ramsey Herrington, M.D., has been appointed chief physician executive of the University of Vermont (UVM) Health Network, president and CEO of the UVM Health Network Medical Group, and senior associate dean of clinical affairs at UVM’s Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine, effective July 7, 2025. He replaces Jason Sanders, M.D., M.B.A., who stepped down earlier this year after serving in these positions for the past three years; Sanders also served as a longtime mentor and advisor to Herrington.
In his new role with the University of Vermont Health Network (UVMHN), Herrington will be responsible for shaping the strategic direction and performance of the UVMHN and UVM Health Network Medical Group, while also spearheading advancements in research and education through the Larner College of Medicine. He will partner with Larner Dean Richard L. Page, M.D., in overseeing the academic network department chairs and all physicians within the system, and will hold a key role in guiding the clinical, academic, and quality and safety missions across the system. As a senior associate dean, he will serve as a member of Larner’s senior leadership team.
Herrington joined the University of Vermont faculty as an assistant professor of emergency medicine in 2006 after completion of his medical degree at University of Alabama–Birmingham School of Medicine and his residency training, including service as chief resident, at Oregon Health Sciences University. He currently serves as associate professor and chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine for both the Larner College of Medicine and the UVM Health Network.
At Larner, Herrington successfully championed, and recruited faculty for, the development of the emergency medicine residency program, and he laid the foundation for the Division of Emergency Medicine to evolve as an academic department, empowering faculty to pursue their academic and scholarly interests while providing the highest-quality care delivery across our rural health system.
Herrington has served on multiple committees for the UVMHN and the UVM Medical Group, helping to expand the clinical mission and quality of care to the system hospitals. His committee work includes governance, finance, quality assurance, and curriculum, and he has contributed to notable quality improvements in patient experience, clinical efficiency, and care delivery. He led initiatives to fully integrate all UVMHN partner emergency departments, and he recently completed service as interim UVMHN chief operating officer.
A fellow in the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), Herrington also is a member of the Vermont ACEP Chapter, the American Board of Emergency Medicine, the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine, and the Society of Academic Chairs in Emergency Medicine. He has mentored medical students, residents, and junior faculty and has received numerous accolades for his teaching and service.
“We look forward to Dr. Herrington’s continued contributions to UVM Larner College of Medicine and a unified, successful academic health system,” said UVMHN President and CEO Sunny Eappen, M.D., M.B.A.; UVM Health Network Medical Group Board of Directors Chair William Raszka, M.D.; and Dean Page in a statement.
